Presenting at the Immigrant Women Entrepreneurs

On November 29th from 6 to 8:30, there will be the monthly Immigrant Women Entrepreneurs event.

Let me start by saying how honoured I am to be speaking at this event, and how nervous and excited I am (both emotions stem from the same area in our brain, so I flip-flop between the two, fully aware that they’re technically chemically the same).

The mission of this organization was started by Karla Briones, a powerhouse of an entrepreneur, and aims to represent and rally immigrant women who are either established entrepreneurs, budding entrepreneurs, or aspiring entrepreneurs.

One of the things I loved the most about having attended these events in the past is that I finally relate. I finally relate to the stories being told on stage. I finally relate to the various stories of family-oriented, career-driven, and visionaries that are at the forefront of these meetings. I finally relate to the fact that oftentimes, we struggle with so many layers that we’re not even fully aware of.

I’m going to give away a little snippet of my presentation here and obviously will expand on it when I’m presenting. It’s this idea of:

Ni de aqui, ni de alla.

Not from here, nor there.

It’s a dilemma I experience as a Euro-looking, South American-born, woman. Which box do I check off? Which ones do I leave blank? Am I a minority, am I taking space away from someone who might be a better, more obvious, representation of this subjective characteristic?

You see, personality-wise I do strongly believe that I am much more South American than Canadian. But the number one observation I get when I say I’m Peruvian is “Oh, I would’ve never guessed! You don’t look Peruvian.” And those people don’t mean anything bad, they simply are unaware of the pot that is already stirring within my unbelongingness pot.

This event makes sense of the recipe that created me as a human. And I hope you’re able to come to experience it too.

Here is the link, grab a spot soon, because it’s been selling out every month!

Hope to see you there, and if not, let me know, and I’ll do my best to get some snippets of the event.

Hasta pronto,

Camila
